Vesper privacy policy

Vesper is a voice journal made by Brand Standards, Inc. What you say to it is personal, so this page explains in plain language what happens to it. If anything here is unclear, write to us at vesper@brand-standards.com.

What Vesper handles, and where it goes

Your voice

Vesper uses Apple’s speech recognition to turn what you say into text. Whenever your iPhone can do this on the device, Vesper requires it, so the sound of your voice never leaves your phone. If your iPhone or language setting does not support on-device recognition, iOS uses Apple’s speech recognition service instead, and Apple handles that audio under its own privacy policy. Either way, Vesper never saves your recordings and never sends them to us.

Your words

The text of your entries is stored on your phone. That includes what you said, any questions Vesper asked you, and the polished version.

Vesper sends text off your phone for three jobs:

• Polishing what you said into a written entry, including the two versions you choose between while Vesper learns how you like to be written.
• Asking you a question, either while you are speaking or as a later evening’s opening question drawn from something you said before.
• Putting your entries together into your book.

For each job, the text goes to our server, which passes it to Anthropic and returns the result to your phone. Our server does not keep a copy of the text and does not write it to its logs.

How Vesper writes you

When you choose between two versions of an entry, Vesper learns how you like your words written: how close to your speech, how warm, and how long the sentences run. It keeps these settings on your phone and sends them along with your words when it polishes an entry or builds your book.

Your backup, only if you sign in with Apple

If you sign in with Apple, your entries and your voice settings are backed up to your own private account, so your book survives a lost or replaced phone. They are encrypted on the way to our server and while stored there, and the database lets each account reach only its own entries. If you delete an entry on your phone, it is deleted from your backup too.

Until you sign in, nothing is backed up.

Your photos

Photos you add to an entry stay on your phone and are never uploaded, whether or not you sign in. The backup records only each photo’s file name, so the entry keeps its shape. This also means photos do not move to a new phone with your entries.

Your account

The first time you open Vesper, it quietly creates an anonymous account with our hosting provider. That account has no name, no email address, and no entries. It exists so our server can tell that a request really came from the Vesper app.

If you sign in with Apple, Vesper asks Apple for no name and no email address. Apple gives us only an identifier that stays the same for you.

Things that never leave your phone

• Reminders are scheduled on your phone. We do not use a push notification service.
• Face ID is handled by iOS. Vesper learns only whether you unlocked it.
• Vesper keeps a small record of app events on your phone, such as when an entry is saved. It is never sent anywhere.

Technical logs

Like any online service, our hosting provider keeps short-lived technical records of requests to our server, such as the time of the request and the IP address it came from. We use these only to keep the service secure and working. They do not contain your words.

Who helps us run Vesper

We use three companies, and only for the jobs described on this page.

• Anthropic provides the AI models. It receives the text for the three jobs above. Under Anthropic’s commercial terms, it may not train its models on that text. Anthropic deletes it within 30 days, unless it is flagged for violating Anthropic’s usage policy (in which case Anthropic may keep it for up to two years) or the law requires Anthropic to keep it.
• Supabase hosts our database and server. It stores your backup if you sign in, on servers in the United States.
• Apple provides Sign in with Apple and, on iPhones that cannot transcribe on the device, speech recognition.

We do not work with advertisers, analytics companies, or data brokers.

What we never do

• We do not sell or share your personal information.
• We do not show ads, and we do not track you across other apps or websites.
• We do not use your words to train AI, and Anthropic’s terms do not allow it to either.
• We do not read your entries. The only exceptions are when you ask us to look at something in order to help you, or when the law requires it.

How safe your backup is

Your backup is encrypted while it travels and while it is stored, and the database itself refuses to show one account’s entries to another. It is not end-to-end encrypted. That means someone with administrative access to our database could, in principle, read it. We keep that access limited to ourselves and use it only as described on this page.

Vesper can also require Face ID to open, if you turn that on in Settings.

How long we keep things

• On your phone: until you delete an entry, or delete the app.
• In your backup: until you delete the entry or delete your account.
• At Anthropic: up to 30 days, with the exceptions described above.
• Anonymous accounts: if you never sign in, your anonymous account holds only an identifier. It may remain after you delete the app, but it contains nothing about you.
• Technical logs: a short period.

Your choices

• Use Vesper without signing in. Only the words being worked on ever leave your phone.
• Turn off follow-up questions while you speak in Vesper’s Settings, if you would rather talk without them.
• Delete your account. If you have signed in with Apple, open Settings in Vesper and tap Delete my account. That removes your entries, your voice settings, and the account itself from our server. You choose whether to keep the copy on your phone.
• Ask us. Write to us for a copy of your data, to correct it, or to delete it. We will answer within 30 days, wherever you live. Depending on where you live, for example California, the European Union, or the United Kingdom, you may have further rights under local law, and we will honor them.
• Disconnect Sign in with Apple from Vesper at any time in your iPhone’s Apple Account settings.

Children

Vesper is not meant for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child has used Vesper, write to us and we will delete what is on our server.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we will post the new version here and update the date at the top. We will not start using your words in a new way without telling you in the app first.
